United Kingdom Television Broadcasts
BBC
Broadcasts of Gordon Murray's Puppet Plays Transmission Standard: 405 lines, B&W Unless stated otherwise, transmissions are BBC London (Ch.1). Dates and times as published in BBC Radio Times (RT), supplemented by Kaleidoscope Children's TV Guide (KG), The Times Online archive television listings, A for Andromeda to Zoo Time: the TV Holdings of the N.F.T.A. (A4A2ZT), the British Puppetry & Model Theatre Guild's Puppet Master magazine (PM), and A.R. Philpott's Dictionary of Puppetry (DoP). Puppet plays are listed as written in the Radio Times, and The Times newspaper. Red type indicates the first transmission of a programme or episode. The "Other" column lists non-Rubovian plays that Gordon Murray was involved with. (refer to the episode guides for more details). Notes: "TR16" means transmission of a previously made 16 mm B&W telerecording. "TR'd" means that the performance was telerecorded. Telerecording could be done two different ways: (i) During a transmission of a live performance; or (ii) At the time of a performance, as if live, but not actually transmitted. This latter case allowed a little film editing, but was done mainly for repeats and overseas sales. |

1964/65: Due to pressure of
competition from ITV’s live-action adventure series, the BBC was moving away
from puppet productions. This led to the disbanding of the
Children’s Department, including the Television Puppet Theatre group. Gordon Murray
consequently decided to take the unusual step of not renewing his BBC staff
contract, leaving in 1964 to became a
free-lance TV film producer. Before long, however, the BBC asked Gordon to submit some ideas for a new series for young children, set in a rural village.
Gordon had already been thinking along similar lines, and presented a
proposal based on a stop-motion animation system he had been developing. Sufficiently impressed,
they asked him to produce a pilot episode. Due to a serendipitous
typing mistake, the series was renamed "Camberwick Green".
Produced for the BBC's 'Watch with Mother' slot, this was the first part
of the 'Trumptonshire Trilogy'. The next two parts were given their own
time slot. From the beginning these programmes were very successful, and were
viewed by a wider age group than originally
intended. 1966, Jan 3rd: "Camberwick Green" children's television series, stop-motion animation (13 episodes, 15 min., colour, B&W). 1967: "Trumpton" children's television series, stop-motion animation (13 episodes, 15 min., colour). 1968: "Chigley" children's television series, stop-motion animation (13 episodes, 15 min., colour). |
|||
1976: "Rubovia" children's television series, stop-motion animation (6 episodes, 21 min., colour) Eight years after Trumptonshire, Gordon Murray took the opportunity to remake six of the old B&W marionette Rubovian plays, in colour, for a younger audience. These episodes used newly designed stop-motion puppets and settings. Unlike Trumptonshire, which was deliberately designed for three-to-four year olds, the stop-motion "Rubovia" series was intended for six-to-seven year olds. Against Gordon's advice, the BBC insisted that the new series should be shown in the same younger age-group 'Watch with Mother' slot which had worked so well for Trumptonshire. As a result the series was not a success, and was never repeated. | |||
